Local/Non-Resident Volunteers

If you live in the Gauteng Area and want to make a difference, then this program is for you. Refilwe does not only need specialized assistance such as medical personnel, plumbers, electricians, handymen etc, but also people that can play with a child, help with homework or plant a tree.

Volunteering at a community based organization is not without its challenges, especially for persons who would like to volunteer skilled or professional services; we explain:

Refilwe falls within the health and social service sector. We deliver a service to the disadvantaged public and all services are directly or indirectly aimed to improve the lives of children. Daily we come in contact with people who would benefit from professional, comprehensive and therapeutic services e.g. psychologists, social workers, teachers, dieticians, etc.

However, still being donor dependent Refilwe is not in a position to offer market related salaries for full time psychologists, compliment of teachers, social workers and health care workers, specialized care workers and support staff  that we need in order to provide state of the art services. The majority of the positions at Refilwe are filled by development staff members who are in need of intensive training and mentoring. This is the reason why we also look for skilled and professional volunteers who could offer their services on a more regular basis. We need this kind of service during working hours on week days. The commitment is normally for the longer term and the volunteer must be willing to build the professional capacity of staff through mentoring and training. This is very rewarding to see a person grow over time and to know that this growth contributes to the overall development of the person’s family.

Adrianne Scheffer (Local Volunteer):

" From the moment I arrived at Refilwe, I was most welcome and immediately felt like belonged to the 'family'.

I have been working with the office staff since January 2009 and I believe we made a big leap forward. By participating in both group trainings and private sessions tailored to the needs and requests of the individual, the business skills of the staff are improving week by week. All are very willing to learn and keen to make progress. People once afraid to switch on a computer, are now able to make an excel spreadsheet. I am very proud of the team and look forward to working with them for a long time, even though they might not need me anymore!

Adrianne"

Response from Hope Notemba (Refilwe Staff member):

"She taught me a lot about emails and how to use Microsoft word and excel. The way you talk to people especially our donors. How to talk to our collegues and to people that are coming here for the first time. What is GPP all about for some one who doesn’t know Refilwe."

Volunteers are people who would like to make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged people, especially in the lives of the vulnerable, weak and suffering - be it children, women, the elderly or animals. They are individuals who see the need, who want to make a meaningful contribution towards changing the causes of the socio-economical problems we experience in South Africa (and the world) and who want to see a better life for all. Volunteers are individuals who would like to show love to the needy in a practical way.

Refilwe welcomes volunteers from all walks of life and of all nationalities and we separate them into local/non-residential volunteers and residential volunteers.
