God Parents Project

The parents receive a monthly stipend from Refilwe in support of their family needs but the amount is not adequate to cover all the food, physical and educational costs needed to sustain the families. People could help by giving:

  • “Adopt a family” – build relations, take the family on outings every now and then, be a support for the parent and just being there for them. Most of the Refilwe God Parents are from disadvantaged backgrounds as well and they also need support in the parenting of the children and in finding resources to help plan for the futures of their children.
  • Monthly food parcels – a food parcel that will help a family of six persons contains 10 kg mealie meal, 10 kg flour, 10 kg rice, 5kg beans, 5 kg sugar, 2 L cooking oil
  • Monthly cleaning parcels – a parcel that will help a great deal could contain 2 kg laundry soap, 750ml dishwashing liquid, 750 ml Handy Andy or equivalent, 750 ml Domestos or equivalent and 12 rolls of toilet paper.
  • Monthly toiletries – this parcel contains toothpaste large tube x2, 4 large bars of soap, a tub of hair relaxer for the girls, a small tub of Vaseline, body lotion
  • Stationary for school and homework
  • Clothes, household equipment and furniture
  • Sponsor training and courses for the God Parents
  • Sponsor professional care for the children and parents like psychologists and play therapists.
  • Sponsor a vacation including the transport costs of a few days for a family
  • Sponsor braids for girls in a family

Refilwe Hands of Hope School

Presently the school is operating on a shoe string budget and the most urgent needs are:

  • Qualified teachers who could commit to teach part-time on a voluntary basis
  • Support in running costs for the school
  • Support school fees for a child which currently works out at R1700/child/month
  • Textbooks, copy books, stationary and art supplies
Day Care Centre

The Day Care centre provides a service to the children whose families live in the informal settlements. The day care fees the parents and care takers are paying is only R50/ month which are inadequate to cover daily expenses and running costs. Refilwe would be grateful for support to the Day Care Centre towards:

  • Nutritious meals – rice and other grains, breakfast cereals, oats, milk powder (no blends or Cremora equivalents), fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese, bread, chicken, mince meat and sausages, bean and lentils
  • Daily expenses per child per month that is currently R630/child
  • For the babies: Nappies, formula, gloves for cleaning bums, bum ointment, towels, face cloths
  • Cleaning materials: laundry soap, JIK, Domestos, dishwashing liquid, Handy Andy
  • Toys, colouring books, crayons, cardboard, poster sheets, soft toys to take home
  • Sponsor training / short courses for the day care workers
  • Sponsor occasional team day outings for the day care workers – e.g. like a day at the spa, lunch at the Wimpy, a movie-day, etc
