God Parent

Our main focus is child care at Refilwe. Our God Parent Programme uses a family-based foster care model where we provide safe and stable home environments for 30 vulnerable children. The children are placed with foster parents within a loving family unit called a God Parent family. We provide for up to 10 God Parent families living at Refilwe. Each family consists of between 4 to 6 children. The Department of Social Development places each child with a suitable God Parent family, by court order.

The children receive quality education, beginning at the Refilwe Early Childhood Development Centre and continuing through very reputable local primary and secondary schools. Our desire over the course of the next year, is to provide a programme that will accommodate and facilitate the older children through a process of growth and self-development to independence.

El Roi

El Roi Baby Home opened its doors in October 2012 on the Refilwe Community Project property in Lanseria. Refilwe wanted to help provide a safe and loving home for babies on their way to their forever families through adoption and so they opened El Roi.

We currently are home to 12 babies who are in the process of being connected with “forever families” through local and inter-country adoption placements with help from Abba Adoptions. There are many organisations and institutions that care for orphans in South Africa however we are seeking to create a home environment where our babies receive all of the things they need to have a healthy, loving and balanced start to life. We have designed a programme that provides our babies with a specialised programme to help meet their emotional, physical, medical and spiritual needs while in our care, including:

  • Bonding Initiation that includes “kangaroo care” and a first 48 hour individual care programme
  • Uniform daily schedule to help establish routine and healthy boundaries
  • Sleep Training which provides that babies with 2 good naps a day and typically produces 12 hours of night-time sleep by 6 months of age
  • Individually designed daily OT Exercises that help our babies to stay on track developmentally
  • Pastoral Care is provided by local and international pastors who pray for the babies regularly and oversee our Baby Dedication Services

Our babies are cared for by a team of nine local and international, paid and volunteer Aunties who are scheduled around the clock to keep our home running smoothly. These Aunties are working together to create a safe, loving and consistent home environment where each baby is cared for until they leave our El Roi family. Our Staff meets monthly to discuss our babies, our home and to spend time enhancing our skill set through training workshops and discussions.

To date we have been able to care for 22 babies, 9 of which have been connected with their forever families through the process of adoption. Statistically speaking, on average 200 babies are abandoned in Gauteng each month. The majority of those babies are left in dangerous or hidden places. In an effort to open the discussion of adoption and abandonment with our community we installed our very own Baby Safe in 2014. It is a place of anonymous abandonment where a mother could abandon her baby in a safe place. It is covered, metal box in our palisade fence that has a weighted sensor in it. When a baby is placed in the safe, an alarm rings in the home and an Auntie would quickly fetch the baby. It provides mothers with a chance to abandon her baby to life rather than death and provides our community with a visible reminder that there are options to be considered and help to be received when anyone is dealing with an unplanned or crisis pregnancy.

ECD Centre

As a community development organization, we aim to help disadvantaged and vulnerable children in our local communities. This is the main reason why Refilwe Community Project started a preschool. At Refilwe we believe that the basis of success in education is a good grounding; especially between the ages of 2 and 6. Mental, emotional, spiritual and physical development is crucial at these ages.

Our passion for children brought us to the point where we felt it was vital to offer the children of the surrounding communities not just a safe haven but also a place of quality education. The Refilwe Pre School started with 5 children in a small room in a house on our site. It has now grown into a four classroom school with 83 children in total.

We offer them 3 meals (breakfast, snack and lunch) a day in an attempt to ensure they are getting a nutritious meal at least twice a day. The classes are conducted in English and we do our best to ensure they get the very best education from us using the resources we have.

The end of July marked the launch of our Ithuteng Community After Care Centre and Recycle Project, which offers structured educational support to over 90 children who live in the nearby Joe Slovo Informal Settlement (Lanseria). We are so excited about this project and would like to extend an opportunity to you to join hands with Refilwe and the Joe Slovo community because as the name of the project says, ‘Come, now is the time to learn’.

At Refilwe we believe in providing a hand up rather than a hand out.
The Ithuteng Community After Care Centre and Recycle Project has already proven to be a great success in a very short space of time. The new after care centre teaches children about responsibility and the environment, as they must collect and bring recyclable material to be part of the programme. In addition, the children receive ‘Refilwe Mulas’ (the new currency at Refilwe) for their recyclable materials and they can then exchange them for stationery, personal care items and basic food stuffs.

Ithuteng is headed up by Nomazza Nomaza and some of the best volunteers on this planet. The children are assisted with their homework as well as children’s, preteen and teen Bible studies headed up by Ryan Moore.  In these ministries our heart is to see our children come to know their Heavenly Father in a real and growing way and to enable them to become all that He has planned for them to be.
