COMMUNITY AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM WITH A RECYCLING REWARDS PROGRAM

The end of July 2015 marked the launch of our Ithuteng Community After Care Centre and Recycle Project, which offers structured educational support to over 100 children who live in the nearby Joe Slovo Informal Settlement (Lanseria). We are so excited about this project and would like to extend an opportunity to you to join hands with Refilwe and the Joe Slovo community because as the name of the project says, ‘Come, now is the time to learn’.

Ithuteng is run by committed local volunteer Nomaza Mariba, who oversees the homework as well as resources. She has a loving heart for her community and desires for each child to reach their dreams. She works tirelessly and sacrificially to allow each child to thrive in her environment.

RECYCLING AND MULA SYSTEM

At Refilwe we believe in providing a hand up rather than a hand out.
The Ithuteng Community After Care Centre and Recycle Project has proven to be a great success. The after care centre teaches children about responsibility and the environment, as they are encouraged to collect and bring recyclable material to be part of the program. The children receive ‘Refilwe Mulas’ for their recyclable materials and they can then exchange them for stationery, personal care items, clothing and basic food items. We have seen some children recycling almost half a ton by themselves in a year.

Children at Ithuteng have recycled to buy themselves sanitary pads and deodorant, new backpacks, food for supper for their family, and even brand new bicycles! This is the power of teaching a strong work ethic from a young age!

TUTORING MODEL

We have identified that there is a great need for further educational support for our community. In partnership with Ikamva Youth, Ithuteng is embarking on an educational tutoring model to uplift the educational needs of our community. This model involves peer to peer tutoring as well as external volunteer tutors such as university students and adults. This tutoring model is offered to High School students only and a minimum of 75% attendance is required to stay in the program.

AFTER SCHOOL SPIRITUAL INPUT

The children also have age appropriate Bible studies headed up by Ryan Moore.  In these ministries our heart is to see our children come to know their Heavenly Father in a real and growing way and to enable them to become all that He has planned for them to be. We believe that a Spiritual foundation is a key to a child’s development and future.
